Conclusion

According to our calculations, the university can save $38.25/hr or $917.91/day according to the set price of electricity which was considered to be 0.1094 $/kWh. However, the costs were not included in this. After considering the costs, the university can save up to $40,885.99 on a yearly basis. These savings can only be achieved once the cost of the initial investment is covered. Since the initial investment is around 2 million dollars over a period of 20 years, the savings only catch up with the investment after 40 years of usage which is a very lengthy process.

In addition, the table and figure below shows where UH gets its electricity from. As you can see, a majority of UH’s electricity comes from coal and natural gas which are non-renewable energy sources. Only about 23% of the energy is produced from renewable energy sources. The implementation of kinetic tiles will allow UH to reduce its dependence on non-renewable energy sources. The generation of 350 KW of power on a daily basis will definitely impact the way we impact our campus.
